Dear Friends

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine. The unbridled aggression being metered out by Russia on a peace-loving, democratic people beggars belief. We stand ready to respond and will keep you posted on opportunities for us as a community, to support the millions of Ukrainians whose future has been shattered by this unnecessary war.

Covid-19 will continue to be a part of our day-to-day lives and with the latest Government guidance, more restrictions are being lifted. A further fall in local infection levels from 717 to 545.9 cases per 100,000 people, proves that the cautious approach we’ve been taking is now allowing us all to enjoy greater confidence in our interactions. We’re learning to live with the virus, managing the risks and continuing to take sensible precautions to protect each other, such as getting our vaccine and booster, keeping rooms well ventilated, wearing our face coverings in crowded places, and staying at home when feeling unwell. There is also information available for those who may be feeling a little anxious about “getting back to normal” after nearly two years of restrictions.

The impact of the pandemic continues. Many households are struggling financially because of the rise in energy prices and the cost of living. Mindful of this, at the budget setting meeting this week, Councillors approved a freeze in council tax on that part which we levy. Approval was also given to provide £250,000 to a residents’ hardship fund and a further £25,000 for food banks across the district. £500,000 was also committed to the Climate Action Fund, in addition to an investment of £140,000 into the tree planting programme. Guidance on the help and support available can be found on our website here.

Our Recovery Plan has received a welcome boost this week:

  • Home Upgrade Grant. £2.5m has been awarded by the government to fund energy efficient measures, such as wall and roof insulation, thermostats and room heating controls, supporting local households on low income, or reliant on alternative fuel sources to heat their homes.

  • Commonwealth Games. 20,000 jobs are now available to work at the Games this summer, for periods ranging from 3 weeks to 3 months. Positions are open for roles in security, stewarding, catering, and retail. Formal experience or qualifications are not required for many of these jobs. More details on how to apply are available here.

  • Community drop-in event.  On Saturday 12 March from 9 am to 2 pm at Warwick Market. Birmingham 2022 organisers will share information about ‘Games-time’ roles, tickets, and the Birmingham 2022 Festival. Our team will also be on-hand to answer any questions you may have about the local plans and preparations we’ve got underway. Further information on our local Commonwealth Games programme will be updated here.

And finally, a big thank you to the team organising and celebrating the 500th Leamington Parkrun tomorrow. These amazing volunteers turn out every week, regardless of the weather, offering us all the chance to run a 5k route through Newbold Comyn and support our fitness goals. It’s no surprise really, that we’re one of the fittest areas in the country! And we’re delighted that the Councillor responsible for our culture and leisure service, Liam Bartlett will not only be officially starting this historic race, but then setting off to join the fun too.

Keep smiling and stay safe.
