Today (Friday 28 January) marks just 6 months until the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games comes to Warwick District.
To mark this exciting milestone, Warwick District Council is sharing a reminder of the current preparations and activities underway for the Games to ensure that residents know what’s on and how to get involved.
Local improvements
In preparation for this once in a lifetime event, Warwick District Council, with the support of Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP), has been making improvements in Royal Leamington Spa’s Victoria Park and the surrounding area.
Commonwealth Connections
Local residents are invited to share stories, memories, anecdotes, and photos to celebrate their connections to the 54 countries in the Commonwealth as part of the Council's Commonwealth Connections initiative.
CultureFest
This summer, CultureFest will be taking place from 16 July to 21 August and aims to encourage the people who live, work and visit the area during the Games to discover or rediscover world-class venues and artists with a packed programme of activities and events taking place across the District.
Queen's Baton Relay
Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games organisers have recently launched their search to find over 2,000 Batonbearers to carry the baton as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay when it arrives in England on the 4 July.
You can nominate someone who has been an inspiration in your community to be a Batonbearer.
Volunteering opportunities
Organisers are also looking for volunteers to support and participate in the Commonwealth Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The deadline to be a ceremonies volunteer is 7 February 2022.
Tickets
Tickets are still available to attend this once in a generation event, and for more information on how to create an account or apply for a couple more tickets, visit the B2022 official ticketing site.
Councillor Liam Bartlett, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Tourism and Leisure, said: “Before the Games arrives this summer, we are delighted to support Birmingham 2022 initiatives, including the recruitment of Queen’s Baton Relay Batonbearers and the search for volunteers for the Opening and Closing ceremonies. It would be great to see local people taking part in these events.
“But if you would rather be a spectator this summer, there is still time to purchase tickets to this fantastic event and experience the vibrancy and excitement of the Games.”
Warwick District will be providing the venue for the Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls at Royal Leamington Spa's Victoria Park, and the Cycling Road Races on Sunday 7 August will start and finish on Myton Road near Myton Fields in Warwick.
