Warwick District Council’s Green Spaces team will have their spirit levels at the ready with work beginning in the next few weeks on an improvement programme for the bowling greens in Victoria Park.
Contractors have been appointed and work will begin on 16 September, on two greens, with another two being renovated in September 2020.
Over the last two weeks, the Council has been working with the appointed contractors to plan the works and to minimise the impact on bowlers, park users and local residents.
The work to improve the bowling greens is being carried out to ensure that they are ready ahead of Victoria Park’s role as an official venue for Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Warwick District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture, Councillor Moira-Ann Grainger, commented: “Being an official venue for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has given us a wonderful opportunity to showcase our district to a worldwide audience. However, with this comes the responsibility to ensure that the lawn bowls facilities are truly world-class. Our ambition is not only to provide a magnificent venue for the 2022 Games, but also for Victoria Park, in Royal Leamington Spa to be recognised internationally as the home of lawn bowls.”
Jonathan Browning, chair of the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP), said: “Coventry and Warwickshire is going to be an integral part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and Victoria Park will be taking centre stage for the Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls competitions.
“Visitors will be arriving in our area from across the globe and this work to the bowling greens will ensure the facilities are in the best possible condition to showcase Royal Leamington Spa to a world-wide audience.”
