Following the announcement that archaeological investigations are continuing in Abbey Fields, we are pleased to confirm that the children’s play area in the park is open for the summer holidays.
The play area has been open at weekends only during the demolition and was initially planned to remain that way until construction had been completed, but with demolition and building work slowed by the discovery of medieval remains on the site, contractors AR Demolition are now able to provide access to the play area during the summer period.
Councillor Will Roberts, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood said: “We understand how important it is to have access to free, local play area facilities for young children during the summer holidays, especially now as the cost-of-living crisis continues.
“While construction is paused, it makes sense to reopen this facility for families, and I would like to thank AR Demolition for enabling access during this period.”
There may be periods when access to the play area will be closed to ensure the safe passage of construction vehicles and material. The Council will endeavour to provide updates on its social media channels whenever such closures will last longer than a few minutes.
Further updates will be provided once work commences on site and the play area returns to weekend only opening until the end of the construction.
