Plans for the restoration and access improvements to Leamington’s Town Hall, as the first phase of establishing a Creative Hub, have been given the green light by the Planning Committee.
Approval by Councillors at their meeting on Tuesday 20 June marks a major milestone in the transformation of the historic town centre building at the heart of the Parade.
The Town Hall Creative Hub is the second major project to be integrated into Leamington’s creative Town Centre and follows the flagship Spencer Yard redevelopment which is due for completion later this summer.
A significant investment from the Government’s Future High Street Fund will make way for a major uplift to the public entrance and reception area, to offer visitors a more welcoming and open space, with the corridor and stair spaces sympathetically refurbished in preparation to host creative exhibitions.
In addition, a new lift will facilitate access to the whole of the building’s first floor including a rejuvenated meeting room and balcony area which will be made available to the public to hire.
Warwick District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Arts and Economy Councillor Ella Billiald commented:
“It’s really exciting to see the Council’s long-held plans and ambitions for a more creative town centre now taking shape. The Town Hall will be celebrating the 140th anniversary of its opening in September 2024, it is therefore fitting that this refurbishment will help to ensure a vibrant future for one of Leamington Spa’s finest and most important buildings, bringing the creative sector to the heart of our town. “
Now that the plans have been approved, the Council will put out a tender for a contractor to undertake the work, which they hope will start later this year for completion in summer 2024. This is a key part of the wider ‘Transforming Leamington’ programme of work.
